5 Reasons to divorce in Nigeria

You want to Re-Marry

If you want to re-marry statutorily, then you have to legally end your current marriage. The only way to put an end to a marriage is through a divorce petition in Nigeria.

You want custody of your children

If you marriage has gone sour and the couple are now livng apart, one of the ways in which you can get full custody of your children is through a an order in a divorce petition. This scenerio is common in Nigeria where the mother is literally pushed out of the house without her children.

You want to leave the country

This is the era of “japa”. A lot of people are thinking of relocating abroad. For couples whose marriages have gone sour, you still need the consent of your spouse if you want to relocate with your young children. Sometimes this consent is not given and you may need to resort to the court to obtain it.

You want to claim a property or Interest.

Any property acquired during the course of marriage can be claimed if you can show proof that you were instrumental in the acquisition. In Nigeria, a lot of spouses support their husbands but their names are omitted in the property documents.
